We went late this month on the credit cards.
Amex is calling no stop at the house.
They even called my office about DH card.
I know not to tell them we are filing until we are ready to do it…..but what else should I be saying?
should i tell them we only get paid once a month?
can i hang up on them?
can I tell them to only call us at home?
can I just not answer?
the amex lady was really rude and she didn't tell me she was recording the call even though i could hear the beeps. she was really pushy and when i said do not call me at work she told me not to get snippy with her.
wtf
i just hung up the phone.
i know i should have been better prepared for this but i have never had a creditor call me so I have no idea what to say do. i feel like a criminal………….
Best Answer: sign up the national do not call registry. If you have signed up once before, you have to sign up again (every five years)
This same type of company calls me quite often so lately I have been stringing them along telling them I am interested, that I have 20k+ debt etc
I have had one of them on the phone for 20 minutes.
I tell them since they have asked me questions, I need them to answer MY questions before I sign up with them. THen I silly stuff like if they like the job that they have, how long they have been doing this etc. When I am close to ready to get off the phone, I ask them what kind of panties they have on or if they have had sex with a billy goat etc!
It is hilarious
SInce they piss me off I feel like turn about is fair play
Reply:Number one choice – DON'T ANSWER
Number two choice – HANG UP
Legally you can request they 'cease and desist' and only communicate with you in writing. Yet, if memory serves me correctly, radi8 once stated this might bring on a lawsuit more quickly.
AMEX are aggressive SOBs. Don't take it personally……..they're just doing their jobs. Tell them that 'snippy' goes both ways. Good-bye and have a nice day.
Computers are dialing your number…….there are gadgets you can buy that recognize collection systems 'handshake' and will not let the call through.
If it is your cell # I would just spend the $20-$30 to get a new number.
Just some ideas,

Reply:YOUR not a criminal! We all go through this at one point in our lives. I loved getting the phone calls at one point a work. The 888's 800's 877's and the blocked ID's… Since I work at a dispatch I would answer… "Assignment Office…" without giving my name. They would ask if I was there. "No… You need to reach him at his home telephone number."
Drove them insane! Day after day… Can you believe I did this for 2 years until I finally filed BK! To give you a stat, over 25% of our work force receives creditor phone calls through our dispatch office. Continuously.
Change your home phone as stated and once you file make sure your lawyer sends out cease and desist letters. Mine did.
Just ignore them…
Get ready for a new fresh start! It feels great.
Reply:well so far they havent called the cells…..and i don't think i have ever listed in on applictions.
we don't use our house number much…..no one calls it except salespeople and the inlaws. We only have it for E-911 since we have a small child.
I have all the ringers off but one……..and the answering machine is muted.
but oy vey….
Reply:it will only get worse
We stopped paying about three months ago. They'll pick up, and then drop off, I think some creditors have given up on me now.
Reply:Dear guy:
Just wanted to say I am in the same boat as you. Sometimes, even with bad things, it is good to know you are not alone!
I am hoping to be filing sometime in September and this is my first month going late and I am starting to get calls as well. Having never been late up until now it is a bit disconcerting and it is only the beginning it seems. What is worse is they are calling my job
Have you retained an attorney yet? Mine told me to tell them that I have an atty handling my financial affairs and give them her info. So far (crossing fingers) none of them have called after that. Of course as soon as I mention an atty they try to get me to cop to filing, which I am not doing on the advice of my atty. My guess is that they are not stupid and will likely be selling my accts to collection agencies as soon as they can and then all bets are off with the calls.
Hang in there!!!!

Reply:you can do what I do, pick up and play some nice music for them into your headset

Hey sweetie—
sorry to hear about your mess too…..sucks huh?
I have not retained a lawyer yet but I have two that I have been talking via email and who are giving me free "advice". I don't want to say anything about a lawyer because we just used the CC last week to install an A/C unit and we need to wait 91 days.
i am going to go with the not answering tactic…and see how that goes for a while.
the music thing is good……i might just hand the phone to Ian.
Reply:if they get snippy just get snippy back.. in fact get REALLY snippy. I called a few employees some choice words to the point they hung up on me. It was funny.
Reply:Hi,
Though I had it for over ten years, I changed my Cell phone # because they were calling what seemed like every five minutes. I really mean a tremendous # of calls each day.
I then checked with my phone co and made it so my phone would not accept unidentified callers.
I screened all calls with caller ID and used my answer machine, very, very rarely did anyone (undesirable) leave a message on my answering machine. I also had "Caller ID waiting" which would tell me who was calling while I was on the phone which would then go to the "message center"( from the same package) again very few CC companies left a message on that.
I got all of these features, and more, for a package rate that was cheaper than my rate at the time.
It might be worth calling your phone co. to see what is available.
I also set of my phone's ringers way down and to two rings before my machine got it. It was inconvenient but, I have gotten through to filing with never speaking to any CC co. or collection people. I was following my Lawyers advice to not waste my time talking to any of them.
I answered maybe two calls when I could tell them I had filed
I learned to not give out my cell phone number now, i hated changing that number but I realise it was worth it.
You'll get through this, consider not answering.
Someone may have a reason to advise against this tactic but it was great for me.
Take care

I LOVED my grandpa. He was an AWESOME man!!! Build his house himself with cash. Complained about having to get permits for the 2nd Guest house he was building on his property. LOL Could not believe the county was cashing in on him wanting to build on his own land!!! HAHAHA Ran a under priviledge ministry for kids but didn't see it has a ministry just the right thing to do. Young boys without male figures in their lives looked up to him and loved learning mechanical stuff. He had missionaries from all over stay at his guest house. All that to say he has a genuine good heart man but ………there were parts that were hilarious. You know how they talk about how phone reps prey on older people. Well I have never seen them try to get off the phone so fast LOL. They would call up my grandpa and he would start to ask them if they were saved, did they love the Lord, did they have Jesus in their heart. It was so funny to hear what the phone rep had to say.

If I ever decide to answer the phone I will try this too. I can just repeat whatever we learned at church on Sunday
One of the creditors called my work today looking for DH….i told them that was not his number and to remove it from there records.
They called the house 3x today but didn't leave a message…I can just tell by the caller id.
I am soooo glad I don't use the house phone so I can keep the ringer /answering machine at off.
Reply:When this was happening to me…I would go to my CC website and change my update information and remove the number from my profile they were calling from.
If it goes to external collections…I guess this point is moot.
Reply:Like guy, I changed my cell#, that was my home # too. I had it for 10 years so I was reluctant. But, it was so worth it. I was getting 80+ calls a day. I did try the youmail thing but it was just getting to be too much still to deal with.
The first day of looking at my phone and having no missed calls was the most peaceful I had felt in a long long time.
Somehow they did get hubby's new cell #, but only one creditor calls it occasionally. I think they got it from his ex-work.
Reply:It will get better sweetie. I love the witnessing part!
